Lyndhurst is often called the capital of the New Forest. It is a charming village with shops, museums, cafes and a lovely old church to explore.

Take a walk along the high street to the gothic church of St Michael and All Angels. Alice Lidell, the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, is buried in the adjoining graveyard. Bolton’s Bench is a local landmark and a lovely place to view the New Forest. Please take care not to feed the ponies at Bolton’s Bench or to eat food near them as they can be quite a nuisance.

Directions

To reach the high street from the car park, continue past the entrance to the Heritage Centre and follow the road out onto Lyndhurst High Street. Here you will find pubs, restaurants, coffee houses and shops selling local goods and crafts.

To continue the walk, use the pelican crossing on your immediate left to cross the road then turn right heading towards the Stag Hotel. After the Ferrari garage use the pelican crossing to cross over the road and keep going towards the trees of the open forest.

Several benches offer a respite as the path runs up to a pedestrian gate. On the other side, cross over onto the road leading up past Bolton’s Bench. Bolton’s Bench is the iconic yew topped hill ahead of you. Retrace your steps when you fancy heading through the village.
