New survey to reveal our ‘sense of belonging’ in protected landscapes

A joint survey by the University of Derby and the Protected Landscapes Partnership is urging people to share how some of our most cherished places make us feel.

Protected Landscapes – National Parks, National Landscapes, and National Trails make up around a quarter of the nation’s countryside and include some of the most popular places to visit.

Places that Matter

This survey is about your experiences, and feelings about, places that matter to you within England’s National Landscapes, National Parks, and National Trails (protected landscapes). This research is being carried out by the University of Derby in collaboration with the Protected Landscapes Partnership.

Why have we asked for your views?

The Protected Landscapes Partnership is working with the University of Derby to find out about your experiences and feelings about these places, hear your stories, and understand if and how these places are important to you. You may share experiences from your childhood, a recent trip, or a distant memory. All experiences, good and bad, are welcome.

How long will it take?

Around 10-15 minutes, depending on how long you would like to spend on your answers. There is a mixture of tick box/multiple choice questions and open text questions where you can share more with us.

Can someone help me complete the survey?

Yes, you can ask a family member or friend to help you fill out the survey. However, please answer on behalf of one person at a time.

Can I share this with others?

Yes absolutely, please share this survey with your friends, family, colleagues and wider community based in England. We want to hear from as many people as possible. However, we can only accept answers from adults (those 18 and above).

What are National Landscapes, National Parks, and National Trails?

In England, we have a network of nationally important landscapes which are called National Landscapes, National Parks, and National Trails. You may have heard of famous ones like the Peak District National Park or the Lake District National Park.

They are legally protected places and have been designated as a protected landscape because of their special qualities. This includes their individual characteristics such as culture and traditions, nature and the landscape, all of which is open to everyone across the nation.

I’m not sure if I’ve been to one of these places, can I still take part?

Yes! You may never have visited one of these places, have visited one of these places but not realised at the time, you may be a frequent visitor, or you may even live and work in one. Whatever your experience, we’d love to hear from you.

What happens next?

This research will help National Landscapes, National Parks, and National Trails to understand how and why these places are important to the nation, which can inform our work.

We look forward to hearing from you!
