Ecological survey calendar

A calendar gives general guidance on the best times of year to carry out ecological surveys in the New Forest National Park, noting that exact timings can vary and advising users to consult an ecologist. It shows optimum, sub-optimal, and out-of-season periods for common survey types. Phase 1 habitat surveys can be done throughout the year, with spring to early autumn generally best. Bat surveys include summer roost/activity surveys (mainly spring to early autumn), hibernation roost surveys (winter), and swarming surveys (late summer to autumn). Bird surveys cover breeding surveys (spring and early summer) and wintering bird surveys (autumn and winter). Other schedules are provided for badger activity and bait marking, dormouse nest tube breeding surveys, great crested newt breeding pond surveys, reptile population surveys, and activity surveys for water vole, otter, and white-clawed crayfish.
